Back to School Update – August 28, 2017

Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen,

I hope you are basking in the warm weather we are having and enjoying the last week of summer break. I have a couple of updates for you that I wasn’t able to share in last week’s Back To School letter.

• Change to Release Time on Wednesdays – You might have heard on the news last year about schools meeting the required instructional minutes. Last year, it was discovered that Yujin Gakuen would need to add 24 minutes to its instructional time for grades K-3 each week in order to make the required 900 minutes required by the state. In the spring, staff decided it would be best to add 25 minutes to the instructional day on Wednesdays, moving our release time from 12:10 to 12:35. I understand that this is short notice, but we were waiting for the confirmation from the district before sharing the news with parents. It’s still not official, but I wanted to inform you that this change is very likely to happen. Staff are looking forward to having the additional time with students on Wednesdays. This will also give time for teachers to have closing activities with their classes before dismissal.

• Staffing Updates – Please join me in welcoming Scott Klein who was just hired as full-time counselor for Corridor and Yujin Gakuen. Scott is a therapist for Oregon Community Programs, where he did his internship and impressed OCP so much that they offered him a job there. He has a long history of working with children and families. In addition, he is a licensed teacher and has experience teaching science, conducting music therapy, and teaching social skills. Scott will start Tuesday on a limited schedule while he transitions out of his current job.

Teachers will officially start back on Tuesday, but several have already been in the building getting ready for school to start. If you have questions about our staffing or Wednesday dismissal, please let us know. We’re looking forward to seeing you next week. Thank you for your support.
