Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen:

We are getting close to the end of our second week of distance learning. We have had a high attendance rate. It’s good to know that so many students are connecting “live” in real time or “on-demand” during other times in the day. Our focus this week, like last week, was on social emotional learning, making connections with staff and peers, and practicing using the technology tools and resources available.

Next week, we continue with our “slow rollout.” Our focus will still be on social emotional learning, but as students are feeling more comfortable with the technology, their focus will shift toward building community and how to work together in this learning environment. Students will also start having “live” PE and music, with one “live” session per week. Thank you all for supporting your children through this new way of teaching and learning.

School Supply Pick Up – Round 1

Next week, we will be giving out school supplies and consumables for students to use during the distance learning. Please note the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday – 10:00am to 6:00pm
  • Wednesday – 7:30am to 3:00pm


Here is a list of items that will be included in the first round:

Crayons (Crayola 24-pack)
Eraser (pink pearl)
Glue stick (Elmer’s 24-oz)
Glue white (Elmer’s 4-oz)
Colored pencils (Crayola 12-pack)
Pencils (Ticonderoga 12-pack)
Scissors 5-inch blunt edge 2 pair

Yearbooks – These will be provided for students who attended YG last year and did not already pick up a yearbook.

Other consumables – Each grade will get a different set of consumables, depending on the needs of the grade and how much we can prepare before next Tuesday. Examples of such consumables include: Hiragana flashcards, multiplication charts, spiral notebooks or journals, strips for practice writing names in Japanese.

Is it required to pick up supplies? – While the supplies that are provided by 4J can be purchased or ordered from online stores, some parents might not wish to come to the school to pick up their supplies. It is important to pick up teacher-created materials, such as flashcards or other materials needed to support learning in our program. A more detailed list will be provided as we get closer to next Tuesday.

Where to pick up? – The location will be the same location as our iPad pickup. Families will need to drive up to the south entrance, in the loop, to pick up supplies. We must continue to practice social distancing.

A second round will be scheduled later in the month. More information will be sent in the next newsletter.

Yujin Gakuen Student Directory

As the new school year kicks off, we are all facing many challenges and hopefully we will create many solutions, together. Seeing old friends and meeting new friends is a big part of the return to school in the fall, and we are hoping to support some of these connections by updating the Yujin Gakuen directory. The Google Forms link below will allow you to enter a phone number, and/or email, as a way for you and your family to connect with other Yujin Gakuen families outside of our regular school day. The directory will be organized by grade and be shared as a digital document in the next 2 weeks.

If you choose to share your contact information, please fill out the form for each child you have enrolled at YG. I would like to put this together quickly so our students can connect, so please enter the information by October 7th. Please contact me if you have any questions. – Scott Klein, counselor.

PTO Meeting October 15

Please email if you are interested in running for an open board position! We REALLY need you (yes, YOU)! It’s an awesome group and this year will offer some opportunities to be creative in how to support our kids’ educational and cultural opportunities. The commitment is 1 board meeting and 1 general meeting a month, and other tasks as needed.

The descriptions are below- we currently have no candidates so please throw your hat in the ring! You will have a soft transition and support from current board members in getting up to speed. Please respond ASAP!


The President shall be the chief officer of the corporation and shall act as the Chair of the Board. The President shall have any other powers and duties as may be prescribed by the Board of Directors and shall specifically will, in general, supervise or oversee all of the affairs of the Yujin Gakuen PTO. The President shall:

  • Preside at all General Meetings and Board Meetings.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Principal of Yujin Gakuen.
  • Oversee work done by the Board and Committees to ensure alignment with the overall purpose and mission of the PTO.
  • Delegate responsibilities as needed.
  • Be an authorized check signer.
  • Set meeting agendas for both General and Board Meetings and distribute to the appropriate recipients.



In the absence of the President or in the event of the President’s inability to act, the Vice President will perform the duties of the President. The Vice President, when acting as the President, will have all the powers of and is subject to the same duties of the President.

The Vice President shall:

  • Assume responsibilities for duties designated by the President.
  • Assume extra responsibilities and roles as designated by the Board.


The Secretary shall have overall responsibility for all recordkeeping. The Secretary shall perform, or cause to be performed, the following duties:

  • Official recording of the minutes of all proceedings of the Board of Directors and members’ meetings and actions;
  • Provision for notice of all meetings of the Board of Directors and members;
  • Authentication of the records of the corporation;
  • Maintenance of current and accurate membership lists; and
  • Any other duties as may be prescribed by the Board of Directors.


Family Zoom Meeting

We held a family zoom session on Tuesday but shortened the meeting so that families could tune in to the presidential debates. We started late because I sent out the wrong zoom information, so parents showed up for one zoom session, while I was waiting in another session. We did finally get back to the same zoom session, but we started late.

Even with the late start, we had over twenty participants who tuned in for a brief presentation on the technology tools and resources available for families. Kellyclare Gardner, who works for 4J Technology, came to talk with our families and gave the presentation. If you didn’t attend the zoom meeting, you can view the presentation here:
