YG Newsletter – January 7, 2021

Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen:

Let me begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year. During winter break, I hope you had the chance to relax and home and enjoy time with your family and loved ones. I got to reflect on the ups and downs of the past year.

A new year always ushers in the sense of renewal – a renewal of purpose and collective commitment to excellence. This sense of renewal feels as important as ever, and I am hopeful that things will get back to normal in 2021. Right now, we are starting to make plans for the eventual return to in-person learning. While we do not believe students will be returning to school anytime soon, there is much work involved in preparing for in-person hybrid learning. Families should expect to hear more information from 4J Communications; however, we will be holding a family Zoom meeting to give families an update on our plans for hybrid, in-person learning next Tuesday. More information is shared below.

This is also School Choice season, and we are preparing to showcase our school to prospective parents. This year, will be very different from years past. We will not be holding on-site school tours, but instead, hold virtual school presentations. We will hold two presentations this month:

Tuesday, January 19th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm
Thursday, January 21st from 5:30-6:30 pm

These presentations will be recorded and made available to families to view on our website asynchronously. See the 2021-22 School Choice Information below.

We have much happening this month and much to do, but I’m glad to see students back on their Zoom sessions, and I’m so ready for things to get back to normal. I hope  you are all safe and healthy. Take care and enjoy the new year.

Sincerely,

Thomas Piowaty

YG Family Zoom Meeting – Tuesday, January 12

We will be holding another YG Family Zoom Meeting next Tuesday, from 5:30 to 6:30 via Zoom. At this meeting, we will give an update on the district’s plans for hybrid in-person instruction and “same school online.” We believe families will have questions about our plans for YG’s hybrid instruction. Scott Sensei, Naoko Sensei, and Kocho Sensei will give a brief presentation and respond to questions. All YG families are welcome to attend. As the date approaches, we will send an email with the zoom link. We hope to see you at the meeting.

Upcoming PTO Meeting and Vote

The PTO would like you to know that there will be a vote at the January 21st meeting on allocating funds for a school mural. Bayne Gardner is working on proposals for mural projects: one he could do for $1,500 or another for $3,000, depending upon what the PTO decides. Members of the YG community are invited to come to the PTO meeting and cast a vote. Information and the zoom link will be sent in a separate email as we get closer to the date.

Oshogatsu

The wonderful Ashley Ferryman put together this list of videos about Oshogatsu. Unfortunately, we cannot hold a celebration at school, but we are sharing these resources with our community. Click the link for Oshogatsu resources and videos.

The last Friday of school in December, Kocho Sensei made a video meeting a challenge by students in which he ate several slices of pizza with wacky pizza toppings.

Safe Routes to School Project for Howard Ave. Receives State Funding

Howard Avenue is one of 43 Safe Routes to School projects across Oregon to receive funding from the state to make it safer for students to walk and bike to school! The City of Eugene is funded to develop a protected walking and bicycling space on Howard Avenue between River Road and Howard Elementary. This project will give students walking and bicycling to school safe space to travel that is physically separated from traffic. There will be a public involvement process in 2021, design in 2022 and construction in 2023.

For more information, contact Reed Dunbar, City of Eugene Transportation Planner at RDunbar@eugene-or.gov.
