YG Newsletter – January 21, 2021

Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen:

We have five more days until the end of the semester, and teachers are focused on wrapping up the semester and completing report cards. Here’s a reminder that there will be no school on Friday, January 29th, as teachers have grading day to focus on completing report cards.

Parents have been asking questions about 4J’s plans for returning to in-person learning. Last night, families received an update from our superintendent, which I will share below.

I hope you all are healthy and well.

Sincerely,

Thomas Piowaty
Kocho Sensei

Back-to-Buildings Update

4J families received an email last night from Superintendent Cydney Vandercar informing them of the revised advisory public health metrics for returning to in-person learning. Parents were assured that the hybrid or on-site learning will not take place on Feb. 1st.

The email includes updates on the following:

  • Public health metrics
  • Hybrid learning model
  • Limited in-person instruction
  • COVID vaccines

For more information, see the 4J website: https://www.4j.lane.edu/2021/01/back-to-buildings-update/

YG Family Zoom Meeting

We held a YG Family Zoom Meeting last week (Tuesday, from 5:30 to 6:30 via Zoom). For parents who were not able to attend, the notes and questions are available below:
In the meeting, we also noted questions from the audience. Initially, we noted my responses to the questions during the meeting, but since most of my responses were based on my own speculation and not confirmed by 4J, I’m just making a list of the questions, and I will fill in the answers when they are confirmed by the 4J Instruction Department.

School Choice for YG Siblings

Student who has already enrolled at Yujin Gakuen will not need to apply for School Choice again next year. The only exception is for students who move out of the 4J boundaries.

If you have a younger sibling and you want your child to enroll in kindergarten next year, remember that you still need to apply for the younger sibling for School Choice. See information below about School Choice and the application process.

PTO Meeting Tonight and Vote on Mural

The PTO would like you to know that there will be a vote at tonight’s meeting on allocating funds for a school mural. Bayne Gardner is working on proposals for mural projects: one he could do for $1,500 or another for $3,000, depending upon what the PTO decides. Members of the YG community are invited to come to the PTO meeting and cast a vote. Information and the zoom link will be sent in a separate email as we get closer to the date.

Site Council Meeting

The site council meets today, from 3:00-4:00pm. We will continue developing our work plan and to incorporate ideas discussed at the November and December meetings. Our work plan includes:

  • How to make the new school environment feel more like our own community or feel like our “home.”
  • Focus on opportunities given the current situation to do things that would have been difficult to do during normal times. Repairing taiko drums was an example. YG will look for options for repairing the taiko drums.
  • Build a sense of community. We will be looking for ways to encourage and enhance a sense of connection. Some ideas that were brought up: would it be possible to hold group activities (online like class reward party with facilitated games or activities) or doing something like an online movie night.
  • How to ensure students were continuing to advance academically and socially.
  • Developing a process for our school community to determine our permanent location.

Agenda for meeting

  • Stakeholders Reports
    • Admin
    • Teachers
    • Classified
