YG Newsletter – March 4, 2021

Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen:

We have two more weeks before spring break, and staff and students are preparing for our transition to in-person, hybrid, learning and for some students to continue learning online entirely (SSO). Staff are both excited to see students back in the building, but they are also working hard to make the transition, having to plan for the change while also teaching their students full-time. We hope students and families are excited and preparing for in-school learning.

Families who have questions, please feel free to contact their teachers or the office.

Thank you for being patient and flexible as we continue to “roll with the changes,” and thank you for supporting Yujin Gakuen.

Sincerely,

Thomas Piowaty

At the March 3rd meeting of the School Board, 4J announced its timeline for Yujin Gakuen to complete its transition to our new location and for determining its future location.

The infographic above illustrates the timeline with the rest of this year’s focus being on preparing for our colocation with Kelly Middle School and determining our long-term location next spring. A retired administrator, BJ Blake, and Jeff Johnson, K-8 administrator, will be leading the transition.

Stay tuned for more information to follow.

YG Family Zoom Meeting –
Preparing Students to Return to School

This past Tuesday, Scott Sensei, Naoko Sensei, and Kocho Sensei met with families to discuss:
Recent Updates to the Hybrid and SSO timeline.
March 15th – Kindergarten and First Grade Orientations: The beginning of hybrid instruction was pushed back to after spring break. During the week of March 15th, YG will hold on-site orientation for kindergarten and first grade students to provide a supportive start with small-group meetings.

Class Configurations: We discussed how each of the grades were configured in hybrid and Same School Online.Kindergarten and first grade in hybrid will continue with their same classroom teachers. Students in Same School Online (SSO) will have their English instruction with Maran Sensei. Takako Sensei and Sayaka Sensei will continue to plan lessons for their students in Same School Online, but Jeanne Sensei will deliver instruction to the SSO students on Zoom.

Students who have chosen hybrid in grades 2 and 4 will continue with their same classroom teachers. Our newest teacher, Connie Powell, will be teaching English for the students in Same School Online. Japanese teachers will continue planning instruction for their students in SSO, but Naoko Sensei will deliver instruction on Zoom.
In 3rd and 5th grades, students in hybrid and SSO will have their same teachers regardless of their pathway. Due to the small number of students who were in hybrid, we were able to configure hybrid classrooms to free up time for the teachers to also teach their students in SSO via Zoom.
Preparing Students For School: Scott Sensei discussed these topics:
Talking with your child
Realistic expectations and flexible thinking
Masks: preparing for wearing masks at school
Comfort items
Routines and rituals
Dress rehearsals
After school
Scott Sensei shared a list of Some things to consider in preparation for returning to hybrid school. He also shared a Map of the building and some key areas.
Inside Yujin Gakuen: We also showed a video (<— click here) of the inside of the building along with some cameo appearances by staff.
