YG Staff Newsletter – April 26, 2021

Dear YG staff,

In case you missed the email, the ACE Award nominees were announced on Thursday, and Ashley, Mariko, and Kelly were among the teachers nominated. See 2021 ACE Awards Nominees on the 4J website. I know that all our staff are appreciated by our families and students. It’s nice, though, to have public recognition. Please give yourselves a pat on the back for all your great work and contributions to our school community.

When Students Have Symptoms

Nurse Robin sent a refresher on steps to take when the student is complaining of or you notice any primary symptoms of covid, which are:
  •    Chills, Fever
  •    Cough (including an asthma cough that student needs to take inhaler for)
  •    Shortness of breath
  •    Difficulty breathing
  •    New loss of taste or smell
The teacher should call the office, and the student should be moved to the care room as soon as possible by Michelle or Laura. Tom will be involved in next steps, please let Tom know as soon as feasible.
If the student is needs to go to office for another health concern, please send the student with an EA or call the office and we will send Michelle to accompany the student to the office area health room. Share the name of student with Laura, or nurse or health assistant if on site. If Robin or Monika is on site, they will assist the student.

Potential Inside Recess

This week, we have rain in the forecast, but it’s changed recently and only shows potential rain on Friday. However, this is Oregon, and the forecast could change again.

Classes can use they gym for indoor recess, but we will need to limit the classes that can use it at any one time. If we have indoor recess, here is the plan for which classes will have access to it. There is enough room in the gym for one grade level at a time. If there we have more than one indoor recess this week, we will take turns each day.

10:45-11:15 – 3rd grade alternates with 5th grade
11:25-11:55 – 2dn grade alternates with 4th grade

For primary recess, we could have kindergarten in the gym, and one first grade class in the first grade hallway. The other first grade class could probably fit in the gym with the kinders.

For details, see that plan for indoor recess in the Google Drive.

District Administrator Updates

Joyce Johnson will be Springfield’s new Elementary Director and David Jacobson is leaving his position as the Federal Programs Coordinator. See the linked email on admin staffing for full details and also some assistant principal updates.

Library Connection

Amy Page sent this week’s Library Connection to principals in Friday’s email.

Hidden iPhone Doc Scanner

If you have an iPhone, here’s a trick Allan Chinn shared. The latest iOS has a scanner hidden within the Notes app and works just as good as a paid subscription app. All you have to do is create a new note in your Notes app and above the keyboard you’ll see a row of icons, one of which is a camera icon. Select the camera icon and you’ll find the option to “Scan Documents.” Further geeky instructions here.

IEP/504 Collaboration Logs are to be completed each Monday by 4:00pm for the previous week of lessons when a new unit begins. This will continue through hybrid. Teachers still need to  complete a separate entry for reading, writing and math instruction (for the entire unit, not for each daily lesson). One response is required for each content area you teach in which students with disabilities are receiving specially designed instruction or 504 accommodations. If teachers do not have any students with a 504 or IEP related to reading, writing, or math, they do not need to complete this form. Linked here is an SSD Slide Show w/Voiceover on this topic. Note: this was created in September and does not reflect the change made mid-year when it was changed from weekly to when a new unit was started.

504 Documentation: Since 504 Plans are typically not content area specific, if a teacher completed at least one log entry for a student with an IEP in any content area, that will cover the requirement for students with a 504 Plan.

Social Skills Only IEP Goals: If classroom teachers are delivering the Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) to meet social skills goals, they would fill out the log form, but in most cases it is SPED staff delivering social skills instruction and they will be the ones documenting this SDI on their own log.

COVID-19 Suggestion Box

The linked COVID-19 Suggestion Box will be posted in each newsletter for staff to make suggestions. I check it every Monday.
