YG Newsletter – April 29, 2021

Dear friends and families of Yujin Gakuen:

Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a great opportunity for me to say how great our teachers are here at 850 Howard Avenue. I feel blessed and honored to work with such dedicated and talented people. I hope everyone will take a moment next week to let our teachers know how much you appreciate their work as they inspire and motivate our students to be their best.

I hope you have a great end of the week, and have a safe and healthy weekend ahead.

Sincerely,

Thomas Piowaty
Kocho Sensei

PTO Meeting – April 29, 2021

The YG PTO will be meeting today Thursday, April 29nd, at 6:30pm, to vote on authorizing an expenditure of up to $5,500 to improve the outdoor garden space and make usable.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Is is the supreme art of the teacher to awake joy in creative expression and knowledge Graphic

Teacher Appreciation Week is observed annually during the first full week in May. The celebration is sponsored by the National PTA which offers additional resources.

Use Main Entrance When Late to School

We are having some students arriving late, after 8:45 and after the south gate is closed, and entering through the west entrance, where our first grade students enter.

When students arrive after 8:45 am, they need to be dropped off at the main entrance. The doors to the south and west entrances will be locked.

Every Wednesday for the rest of the school year YG will be having “Spirit Wednesday!” Every Wednesday over Zoom students will be able to dress up as much or little as they’d like to celebrate the designated theme.

This coming Wednesday, May 5th, we will be kicking off Spirit Wednesday with PJ and Stuffy Day. Students can come to Zoom dressed in their comfiest PJ’s accompanied with their favorite sleeping buddy.

The Wednesdays to follow:

  • May 5th: PJ & Stuffy Day
  • May 12th: College Day (sport your favorite college accessories)
  • May 19th: Favorite Animal/Book Character (bring a favorite book or stuffy)
  • May 26th: Wild Hat/Hair Day
  • June 2nd: YG Day (wear your YG/Kelly gear)
Lifetouch Panoramic Picture This Monday - SCVi, iLEAD's Founding School

School Pictures – May 18, 19, and 20

Mark your calendars! We have approval for Lifetouch to be on our school campus to shoot photographs of our students and staff.

  • Students in Cohort A will have their pictures taken on Tuesday, May 18th
  • Students in Cohort B will have their pictures taken on Thursday, May 20th
  • Students in Same School Online will schedule pictures on Wednesday, May 19th

The picture taking process will be touchless this year, and in addition to following their own safety protocols they will follow 4J safety protocols as well.

Some safety measures to keep in mind:

  • Lifetouch employees will remain in the designated picture taking area at all times.
  • As a part of their “touchless” process Lifetouch employees and staff will not be touching kids, fixing hair, etc.
  • There will be no parent volunteers to assist with the process.
  • Face coverings must remain on until the student is instructed to remove it. Once the picture is taken, the student will immediately put their face covering back on.

We will have more information to follow in the next newsletter and in email.

Site Council Elections

We are approaching our May Site Council meeting, and it’s time to elect new parent representatives. Last year, with the change to online learning in the spring, we did not hold elections, and the parent members on site council agreed to continue serving this year.

We usually have two parent representatives on site council, each on a two-year term but staggered. This year, since we did not hold elections last year, we will be asking for one parent to serve a one-year term and the other parent to serve for two years.

If you are interested in being on site council, please download and complete one of the following:

Please submit your application by May 12th. Candidates can send their applications via email. If anyone has difficulty with printing and sending applications, please contact the office at: 541-790-4640.

Applications should be sent by email to: piowaty_t@4j.lane.edu. Or, paper copies can be dropped off at the office.

We will hold an election, announcing our candidates in the May 13th newsletter and counting votes at our May 20th Site Council meeting.

For more information see our Site Council page on the YG website.

4J Plans for 2021 State Testing

Families were sent an email asking them to indicate how they wanted their child to participate in state testing. See below if you did not receive the email:

Public schools conduct state testing each spring for students in grades 3–8 and 11. The annual statewide assessments measure students’ proficiency in state and district learning standards, and test results provide important information for parents, teachers, schools and districts.

State testing is different during the pandemic. The U.S. Department of Education has approved Oregon’s plan to greatly reduce the amount of testing for the 2020–21 school year.

To avoid taking up the limited time teachers have with students this spring, 4J schools will conduct state testing on a Wednesday in May, not during regular synchronous (live) learning time.

When: The testing day for Cohort A is Wednesday, May 19. For Cohort B, it is Wednesday, May 26. Same School Online students may test on either day.

For elementary and high school, testing will be offered 1–4 p.m. For middle school, it will be offered 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

A makeup day will be offered for students who missed the testing day or want more time: Wednesday, June 9 for middle and high school, and Friday, June 11 for elementary school. This also will be the testing day for Eugene Online Academy students who participate in state testing.

Where: Students who participate in state testing will complete the tests on-site at school. School meals and school bus transportation will be provided.

What: Tests this year will be given in just one or two subjects for each grade level. For more information about the test subjects for grade <<Grade>>, visit 4j.lane.edu/state-testing-2021.

You have three options:

– Complete the reduced state tests as scheduled
– Complete additional tests for the other subjects normally tested
– Opt out and not complete state tests this year.

Response Form: Participate or Opt Out • Español: Participar o Declinar

Please respond by this Friday, April 30 with your testing selection, so the district can plan for transportation and testing supports.

Families were also sent a voice message in English …

and in Spanish

More information can be found on the 4J webpage: 4J Plans 2021 State Testing to Avoid Class Time

Proposed Elementary Calendar for 2021-2022

If you are interested in next year’s elementary calendar,. the school board will approve the calendar at the April 21st meeting. One key change in the calendar from what has been past practice is that the first day of school will be on the Friday following Labor Day, instead of Wednesday.
