YG Staff Newsletter – May 3, 2021

Dear YG staff,

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTO and our non-licensed staff are planning to bring some good things to show our appreciation for our wonderful teaching staff. While it is meant for showing appreciation for teachers, I want to acknowledge all our staff for their hard work, patience, and flexibility as we continue to navigate this extraordinary year. We have extraordinary people who work at YG.

Here’s an outline of the what teachers can expect this week:

Monday: breakfast burritos
Tuesday – Coffee, pastries, and some savory snacks
Thursday – Snack Bar – PTO
Friday – Pizza Party – PTO

An additional surprise for teachers to be revealed later.

Jennie’s Notes from Kelly/YG Meeting with Superintendent

Jennie shared the notes she took at the meeting Friday with Kelly staff and Cydney Vandercar. Takako also took notes that she’ll share later.

Presentation of Mural from YG 8th Graders

Jennifer Mora and two of our 8th grade students, Monet Reel and Alexa Henderson, would like to present a mural the girls created as a gift to Yujin Gakuen. They will be meeting us outside the cafeteria at 2PM on Tuesday, May the Fourth. Please join us for the presenation and a reunion with two former YG elementary students.

Leadership Planning – Paused

Principals were asked to put on hold any conversations related to next year’s leadership plan until we receive further guidance from Human Resources. As you may be aware, the district and the EEA entered into an MOA regarding pay equity and leadership funds.

easyCBM Assessment Window

The window for spring opens on May 3rd. We will use the same number of measures as we did in the fall.

The spring assessments will be done online as in the fall for three reasons:

  • (1) equity for students with different levels of access to in-person instruction
  • (2) preserving in-person instructional time, and
  • (3) guaranteeing that spring and fall scores are comparable and can provide an estimate of how much our students have progressed academically in this difficult year.


Employee Reimbursements

With the changes in April regarding employee reimbursements and as we approach the end of the year, this would be a good time to review the 4J Employee Reimbursement Policy. The policy requires that:

  • expenditures are to be pre-approved by the building principal
  • where possible, principals are to direct employees to use purchasing agreements, including the Office Depot and Amazon business accounts
  • reimbursements are limited to $250 per reimbursement per month.
  • reimbursements should be submitted and paid through Financial Services within 60 days of when the expenditure occurred.

National Board Certification Information Meeting

In partnership with OEA, Rebecca Boyd, is holding a 1-hour information session on how to become National Board certified. Sessions are on May 12th & 17th at 4:00 and May 20th at 4:30. How Many Students Taking SAS

As the parent survey on participation in state assessments closed last Friday, I am expecting to see results of the survey on Monday. Jennie and I have a meeting scheduled at 2:00 pm Monday, hoping to take a look at the numbers. I have been informed that last week, the number of families who opted out of testing was over 70 percent. However, those who opted in are more likely to request all the tests. If the trend holds up, and if we assume parents at YG will opt out at a higher rate than the norm, we may have about 40-50 students who will test.

PTO Approves Funds for Garden

Hello All,
   Here is the list of things that we thought of at the garden meeting today and the items of most urgency. We so greatly appreciate all the support of the YG PTO and are so thankful for a wonderful outdoor learning space.
  Most Urgent Items:
        * gloves, spades/trowels, shovels, wheel barrows, clippers
        * canvas shade tarping  & 10 eye hooks for hanging     – There are 10 vertical log posts.
        * rain barrels.  = either two to go down our drain pipes or a large container from maybe EWEB or BRING
        * 3 – 5 picnic benches (not certain the exact amount necessary for space)
        * Access to 1 and 2 foot high log sections from Department of Urban Forestry
        * Irrigation Supplies (hoses, y-value split, timers)
Down the road
      * whiteboard
      * greenhouse
      * native plants
      * Japanese Garden and Kelly’s sharing idea
*** For Now – Ashley Baker will find cloth strips to give to all students in Kelly and YG to write a message on and string through the YG’Kelly Garden Fence.
** Love Food Not Waste or school will look into composting


IEP/504 Collaboration Logs are to be completed each Monday by 4:00pm for the previous week of lessons when a new unit begins. This will continue through hybrid. Teachers still need to  complete a separate entry for reading, writing and math instruction (for the entire unit, not for each daily lesson). One response is required for each content area you teach in which students with disabilities are receiving specially designed instruction or 504 accommodations. If teachers do not have any students with a 504 or IEP related to reading, writing, or math, they do not need to complete this form. Linked here is an SSD Slide Show w/Voiceover on this topic. Note: this was created in September and does not reflect the change made mid-year when it was changed from weekly to when a new unit was started.

504 Documentation: Since 504 Plans are typically not content area specific, if a teacher completed at least one log entry for a student with an IEP in any content area, that will cover the requirement for students with a 504 Plan.

Social Skills Only IEP Goals: If classroom teachers are delivering the Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) to meet social skills goals, they would fill out the log form, but in most cases it is SPED staff delivering social skills instruction and they will be the ones documenting this SDI on their own log.
