YG Staff Newsletter – May 31, 2021

Dear YG staff,

I hope you all had a great 3-day weekend. A group of teachers met with Scott, Laura, and me on Friday afternoon and discussed plans for the final week of school. The last day for K-4 will be asynchronous while 5th grade will be on site. The intent was for K-4 teachers to be on hand in order to assist with the 5th grade on-site activities. However, we also considered having at least some time for all students to be together, perhaps the 8:45-9:15 SEL time so that teachers and students see each other on the final day. In addition, we considered not doing a virtual field day since there is an on-site day on the last Wednesday. We suggested that each grade determine what they want to do on Monday and Tuesday. That is, each grade could hold virtual field day activities.

Amanda and Jemei were talking and doing some initial planning for the Wednesday event. I don’t know how far they got.

I will be sending out a survey for teachers to weigh in on K-4 live time on zoom on June 17th and teachers doing their own virtual field day June 14th and 15th instead of on the last day.

Report Cards

Report cards will go home with hybrid students during the Wednesday, June 16th, on-site events for K-4, and Thursday, June 17th, for 5th graders. We will mail report cards to students in SSO.

Journeys Textbooks

With K-4 students coming on-site on the last Wednesday, we need to collect Journeys textbooks when students come on site, even though there will be one additional school day. We will collect textbooks from 5th grade students on the last Thursday, when they are on-site.

Collecting 2nd Grade iPads

Instruction has decided most students will keep their iPads over the summer. However, because 3rd grade will have different iPads, we will need to collect iPads from 2nd grade.

They will return iPads after the last day of school on Friday, June 18th between 8:00-2:00. If we get the charger and cord, great! If we don’t, the district is not going to worrying about it. 4J will notify families about this, but I will also announce it in the newsletter.

Bus Safety Training

The state still requires schools to cover the annual bus safety training, but downtown says we can meet this rule by simply giving students this Riding-the-School-Bus-Safely Handout. I’ll send this as a Seesaw Announcement to students and families on Tuesday.

Input on ESSER Funding, DUE MONDAY

If you missed the district announcement, Monday is the deadline to give input on how 4J should spend ESSER funds. Smaller class sizes and facilities to support those smaller classes are options being considered, so let your voice be heard on the ESSER Survey!

Masks & Vaccination Verification

Staff should note in the Face Mask & Vaccination Verification Email that staff must continue with current mask protocols until your vaccination status is verified. It’s not clear if that verification will come as an email to staff or if it will come to me first when I pass out the verification stickers to put on your badges (which principals haven’t gotten yet)

Repeat – Class Lists for 2021-2022

Teacher teams should start to create their suggestions for class lists next year. Please use the linked YG Class Lists 2021-2022 sheet to enter the information for the next grade’s team to suggest class configurations based on what you know of the students’ performance this year. In this year’s list, some teachers added information about students whose parents were volunteers. I did not include a column for that information, but teachers are free to edit their sheets.

Administrator Staffing Update

Melissa Ibarra, principal at Buena Vista, will be a new Director of Elementary Education (taking over for Brooke Wagner, who is taking Cydney’s old job as assistant superintendent). Melissa will also serve as administrator for Dual Language Immersion.

Jeff Johnson will continue in his role as Director of Elementary Education and will be in charge of Federal Programs (including Title I) taking over for David Jacobson who will not be replaced.

Stephanie Randall, who has been Assistant Principal at Willagillespie and Gilham, will be the new principal for Buena Vista.

Garrett Bridgens, will be moving from his position as principal at Charlemagne to Assistant Principal at ATA.

Matt Myers will be the Assistant Principal at Cal Young.

We will be recruiting for principals for Adams and Charlemagne.

Chris Benz and Tracy Ross are leaving 4J for other opportunities.

Update On Kelly Building

Cyd Vandercar asked me to provide an update on the building. 4J plans to hear more information about the engineering evaluation next week. Work on shoring up the roof continues and the outcome appears positive thus far. Information will be coming your way soon.
  • Friday, May 7: 4J staff member was doing routine maintenance on the HVAC system.
  • Monday, May 10: The maintenance person returned to the school and noticed cracks in the sheetrock.
  • Monday, May 10: Facilities administrators inspected the site.
  • Monday, May 10: A structural engineer was called in and conducted an initial assessment on Monday evening. The structural engineer noticed that a roof truss was failing.
  • Monday, May 10: A communication was sent to staff and students informing them of the roof truss issue.
  • Tuesday, May 11: The structural engineer returned and investigated the roof line and discovered the second truss was failing as well.
  • Wednesday, May 12: Facilities management contacted Hyland Construction to scheduled site visit.
  • Monday, May 17: Hyland and facilities met to determine next steps.
  • Tuesday, May 18: Hyland and a shoring subcontractor met with facilities staff at the site to plan the shoring.
  • Wednesday, May 19: The shoring contractor was onsite to begin the work to shore up the roof that will allow a safer work for Hyland.
  • Thursday, May 20: Hyland mobilized equipment to begin selective ceiling demolition.
  • Friday, May 21: Hyland began selective ceiling demolition.
  • Monday, May 24: Hyland continues ceiling demolition. Second phase shoring will start once ceiling demolition is complete.
  • Monday – Wednesday, May 24 – 26: Hyland ceiling demolition.
  • Thursday – Friday, May 27 – 28: Second Phase of shoring in process.
  • Next week: Finalize shoring, engineering evaluation.
