YG Staff Newsletter – January 3, 2022

Dear YG staff,

I hope you all had a relaxing holiday season and winter break. Enjoy your new year traditions. I’m looking forward to seeing back on Monday.

Items of Note

Guest Teachers and Substitutes

Reiko Out Until Friday – Reiko will be out most of the week. She returns on Friday. I’m hoping we can get Izumi to cover, but we will need Janesta and Elayne to fill in as much as possible since they are more familiar with the routines and students than any substitute would be. More information will be shared on Monday.

Alison in for Mariko on Tuesday, January 5th – Nancy emailed and let me know that she has reservations to return on Tuesday, January 4th, but we are making plans in case her flight gets cancelled or delayed. More information as it becomes available.

COVID-19 Updates

Mask Lanyards and Outdoor Mask Update

On January 4th, students will no longer be required to wear masks when outside. We have lanyards for each student, color coded with enough for each grade to have its own color. See photo to the left.

Students will still need to wear their masks while they are walking from their room to exterior doors. They should keep their masks with them as they play outside. Here are some suggestions for helping them keep track of their masks:

  • Wear their mask lanyard
  • Keep mask in pocket
  • Wear mask below their chin
  • Wrap mask around the arm/elbow.

Outdoor Mask Requirements for Staff

Staff have the option of taking off their masks outdoors, but they must maintain 6-feet of distance from students. Since kids will be running up to adults at recess or at arrival/dismissal times, I suggest staff use a mask lanyard or keep masks under the chin so they can quickly put masks back on when students are closer than 6 feet.

Masks at Arrival

Since masks are not required to be worn outside, we might have some student arriving without masks. We had more masks delivered prior to winter break, so we have extra masks on hand. We will place them at the three entry points.

Quarantine Protocols Status Quo – For Now

You may have heard on the news that the Center for Disease Control has revised its 10-day quarantine guidelines to a 5-day quarantine period. We are not making any changes until the new guidelines are determined by our state and county.

Professional Development and PLC

Here’s a draft agenda for that day. I’m re-sharing what I put in my Friday email on December 17th:

8:45-10:00 – YG Operations
10:15-11:30 – Team collaboration. JPN teachers collaborating, reviewing report card preparation, and planning supports for new students; ENG teachers planning interventions, supports, progress-monitoring.
11:30 – 12:00 – Library
12:00 – Lunch provided in cafeteria
Teachers have planning time after lunch
1:30-2:30 – EA meeting
2:30-3:30 – Medication training for key staff with Nurse Robin

For EAs: I know that having a consistent supervision schedule is very important, but I want to prepare everyone for some changes to come in January. I know there were some changes made this week, but be prepared for some small changes in January. The changes will not affect everyone, and will have a minimal impact, but there will be some changes. Just letting you know.

Remember that lunch will be provided in the cafeteria. Kelly staff will be joining us.

Friday PLC – This will focus on review of PLC process and data teams. We will discuss this further at our operations meeting Monday. Watch for a separate email with more details as we approach Friday.

Repeat – School Choice Virtual Tours

I got word from Communications Friday that they will not be able to assist us with making a School Choice Video. So, we will have to create our own. I will be reviewing the virtual tour from last year to see what we can re-use for this year.

At our staff meeting, we did discuss the following dates and times for tours, and I did not hear any objections, so let’s go with these:

  • Thursday, January 13th, 3:30 pm-4:30pm
  • Tuesday, January 18th, 6:30-7:30pm

More information to follow. We will work out final details on January 3rd.

Send Photos for Social Media

Some of you have already been sending photos to Laura that she is sharing in our weekly newsletter. This week would be a good time to capture some of the fun or interesting activities happening. Please send photos to me or Laura so we can post to our Facebook page and in our School Choice campaign.

UO International Student Free Presentations

The UO International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) is offering in-person and virtual cultural presentations to schools. See the linked UO ICSP-Digital-Brochure-2021-22 and UO ICSP website for student profiles, presentation topics, and how to request a presentation.

Other Miscellaneous Items

District Administration Update – Jose Salgado has resigned from his position as assistant superintendent for instruction with 4J. The superintendent has not yet determined the future of the position.

EEA Seminar Brochure – Linked here is the EEA 2022 Professional Development Seminar Series, which provides PD opportunities for EEA members. It also provides an option to earn credits for the purpose of moving teachers on the salary schedule.

Hazardous Weather Information for 4J Staff – As a reminder, here is the Hazardous Weather Information on the district webpage. This has the information you will need when hazardous weather arrives. Setting up the text message alerts for school closures and delays can be very helpful.

I shared this in a past newsletter, but I thought it would be a good reminder to reinforce the importance of morning meetings. This Edutopia article and the video above show some proactive community building strategies that establish a sense of shared values and a feeling of belonging. These make references to the start of the year, but the lessons apply now as we return from winter break.
