YG Staff Newsletter – January 10, 2022

Dear YG staff,

We finished our first week in 2022, and we had some staffing shortages that made things a little hectic. Thanks to our classified staff for making adjustments. Fortunately, students were pretty mellow. This next week will be our only 5-day week this month.

Items of Note

Guest Teachers and Substitutes

Reiko Back to Work – Reiko is scheduled to return to work Monday.

Alison in for Scott on Monday Morning – Alison Johnson will cover for Scott while he attends a counseling meeting.

Nancy in All Week for Mariko – Nancy is back all week.

COVID-19 Updates

Principals are doing more contact tracing and quarantining this past week than any other single week. With Omicron being more virulent, I’m expecting more students to be quarantined.

Keep Seating Charts Updated – Some teachers have changed seating charts and cafeteria assignments. Be sure to give me the current seating chart for your classroom and update the cafeteria charts. Those of you who posted your cafeteria seating charts, thank you.

Length of Quarantine Period – At this time last week, I reported that the quarantine period had not yet changed. This last week, it was changed from 10 days to 5. Students and staff do not need to be “symptom free,” but instead have to be “improving symptoms without medication.”

School Rapid Tests – Each school has a limited supply of rapid test kits (BINAX). These can be given to staff or students who are a close contact due to exposure at school. However, we cannot use the rapid tests for an exposure outside of school.

Booster Clinics – For information on where you can get a COVID booster, visit Vaccines.gov.

Report Card Information

Eric Anderson sent an email and Final 2021-22 Report Card One Pager. Note the key information below:

• Elementary Grading Day – Friday, January 21
• Elementary Staff Work Day – Friday, January 28
• Report Cards Sent Home – Monday, January 31

In addition, note expectations for Report Card Grading Day:

Licensed Staff – Grading day is a regular work day. HR allows teachers to work from home if you notify your administrator in advance, but be sure to plan ahead if you need to collaborate with any colleagues on grading. Please be sure to use this time for grading and not use it to run errands around town. Teachers are highly visible members of the community, so keep in mind public perception. HR has said that if working off-site on grading days is abused, we will not be allowed to continue the practice.

Official Testing Window Has Been Released

ODE’s official testing windows are March 8th – June 3rd for grades 3-5. In the future, downtown will provide a tighter window for when all elementary schools will be expected to assess students.

Classified Staff and Delayed Start Days – HR emailed principals regarding expectations for classified staff on days when there is a 2-hour delay. Highlights include:

• All Classified staff should report to work as soon as they can do so safely.
• School-based classified staff should report to work as soon as they can safely and in time to perform assigned duties. This should be no later than 2 hours after their regular reporting time.

• Missed work time can be made up during the workweek in accordance with trade time provisions in the collective bargaining agreement (Article 11.3). If an employee is unable to or is not interested in making up the missed work time during the week, they may use available comp time and/or personal time, if eligible.
• Staff are not be permitted to use paid sick time to make up for time missed from work due to the weather.

• Employees and administrators/supervisors should work collaboratively to resolve questions and concerns.
• Human Resources is available if administrators or supervisors have any follow-up questions.

United Way Annual Giving Deadline, TUESDAYAll-Districts-Pledge-Card-Fillable-2021 will be collected through Tuesday, January 11th. See the linked United Way of Lane County email for details. FYI: You can make a donation directly to your classroom and then you get a tax deduction!

4J Superintendent Selection

Fill out the Superintendent Selection Survey by Jan. 25th if you’d like to make your opinions heard. The main point I made on my survey was I want someone from the northwest who might actually stay and not another outsider short-timer who’ll just use 4J as a stepping stone to something else.
