YG Staff Newsletter – May 16, 2022

Dear YG staff,

I hope you are having a good weekend. It got a little bit warm on Saturday, and we are expecting temperatures up to 70 degrees on Sunday. I’m hoping we have nice weather this week. We are getting closer to the end with only two full weeks remaining. The remaining weeks are 4 or 4-and-a-half days.

Items of Note

May 13th Meeting – Notes

Someone asked that the meeting notes be shared in the staff newsletter. There are some things that I thought about after the meeting, and they are in blue text.

Expectations for teaching ELA

  •  Eric Anderson says he expects all ELA teachers to teach the new curriculum. We will not have the option of keeping old Journeys or other old curriculum. If this is an issue, let me know.
  • Most ELA teachers are not excited about Journeys anyway, so I don’t think this will be a problem.
  • Teachers will need to pack their old ELA materials. Boxes have been ordered, and the warehouse will move them during the summer.
    • Ashley – Question, can we keep some books from BAW?
    • Can we get another recycling bin? Tom will talk with Dave about another bin

Plastic forks, spoons, etc

  • Please do not take from the kitchen
  • Laura has ordered a set of plasticware that we will use for events and celebrations, etc.
  • Staff should bring their own cutlery when eating their own lunches, or using the regular forks, knives and spoons, etc that we have in the staff room.

Items for Discussion

Preparation or questions ahead of the May 20th meeting. Scott shared a document for staff to write down their concerns over space. See below.

  • Facility & space concerns at 850 Howard
  • Ask for an agenda for May 20th meeting
  • Continuity into next year
  • Projections for increased growth?
  • Tour ECCO or Willard – Note: this was not discussed at the meeting, but if a modular building was added to the campus, it would be used by Kelly, not YG. In order to add more space for YG, we would add a classroom to our side of the building, likely Room 15. This would make more sense as the modular would likely be added to the east side of the campus. In addition, Room 15 has a sink, and it would be best suited for elementary use. I don’t think a tour of ECCO for YG staff would be necessary.

NED Virtual Assembly – May 23rd or 24th

  • Will schedule after 1PM, so that the assembly does not interfere with specials
  • We are leaning towards holding the assembly on Tuesday, but would like to hear teacher feedback before making a decision
  • The PTO would likely buy some yoyos that we could use as an incentive.
    • Staff are in favor of holding the virtual assembly
    • Tuesday at 1PM

Emeralds Game Day

  • Poll Results – Link
  • Discussion and Decision
    • June 11th date chosen by staff.
    • Tickets range from $17-35

Field Day Draft Schedule – Jun 9, 2022

We are still in communication with NEHS regarding 9th grade students helping us with a field day experience. However, there was talk that it would be a regional field day, but that’s not my understanding. Regardless of whether or not 9th graders can help us, we do have interns available who can help supervise the events. Additionally, we will have two teachers available to supervise during each session.

Grades 4-5 – 8:45-9:45
Grades 2-3 – 10:10-11:10
Grades K-1 – 11:45-12:45

Intern Appreciation Luncheon? Ideas for when to hold the event?

  • Alternate days/times to hold the luncheon
  • Or, identify a day, and have food in the staff room, and understand that we cannot all be there together at the same time.
  • June 10th – 11:00-1:00 – staff determined that this was the best time; however, Tom sent an email after the meeting. Teachers might prefer holding an intern appreciation dessert on June 3rd after school. See the staff poll that was shared on Friday afternoon.

Last Day of School Release Time

Principals got word that schools on the Tier 2 schedule: 8:30 to 3:00 will be released at 11:45 on June 17th, the last day of school.

iPad Collections

The district has made the decision to collect all student iPads K-8 at the end of the 2021-2022 School year.  While some schools have continued with a true 1:1 where students take iPads home daily others have chosen to keep devices at school.

Most schools already have enough carts to accommodate this, but the technology department is currently working on inventory and moving carts from middle schools to support this initiative.  Once you have all of your cows in place you may start requiring students to maintain iPads at school. Starting May 31st after Memorial Day,  all devices at all elementary schools need to be stored at school.

5th Grade Promotion Ceremony

Principals were informed today that end-of-the year promotion ceremonies may take place and may be scheduled indoors or outdoors for 5th grade. If we hold the ceremony indoors, it would alleviate the problem of having a plan for a rainy day.
Principals were also told not to ask for any more exceptions to our COVID rules/protocols.
Nutrition Services would like to support end of year celebrations and have a few menus in development. They are working on a special breakfast for 5th grade students, and they are also offering several versions of a picnic/BBQ lunch menu. We had talked about reserving the cafeteria on the morning of Thursday, June 16th. Is this something you still want to do? If so, I’ll need to let Patty know what you want. We would need to schedule the cafeteria for a time after Kelly students are finished with breakfast.

School Supplies for Fall 2022Holly Langan and her team wanted to make sure that building principals were aware of the bulk supplies that we are purchasing as a district for each school. Here is the email that Julia Girod sent out a few weeks ago, but not all principals were not included in this communication earlier.

Self-Harm Event Recording

Linked here is the Self-Harm Video Recording from the community event about self-harm that was held April 25th at Sheldon. It could be a good resource if families reach out about self-harming behaviors.

FOSS Science Kits

We didn’t have time to show the slide deck and also discuss the intern luncheon, so we decided that teachers would watch it on their own. See below:

  • FOSS Kit 1:1 Rollout Slidedeck
  • Main points:
    • Each classroom teacher with have their full year of science curriculum (3 modules).
    • Science kits will no longer be returned and restocked at the district level.
    • District will support restocking of consumables and live materials.
    • Teachers Submit a Spring 2022 Restocking Form to replenish consumables.
    • Continue to use the 4J Science website for the prioritized lessons & standards (since there’s not enough time to teach ALL lessons).
    • Additional kits will be delivered to schools over the summer.
    • Kits need to be cared for as if you were passing them along to another teacher.
    • Keep items in the boxes that they belong in. Use the list on the front of each box to keep track.
    • Kits are stocked for multiple uses, but you will have the opportunity after each use to fill out a Kit Restock form.
    • Storage and maintenance of science kits will be managed at the building level, but I will be talking with my director about finding other options for storage.

Grade Placement and Retention of Students

In case anyone asks about holding a student back, here’s the board policy for your reference.

Guest Teachers and Substitutes

Laura will be taking leave on Thursday and Friday, and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the following week. We do not have a substitute lined up for her this week, but Jessica Claypool will be in on Monday and Tuesday.

MondayLauralie will be taking leave, and Gale Fiszman will cover for her.
WednesdayMaran will be taking the afternoon off, and Matt Houser will cover for her.
ThursdayNaoko will be out, and Jody will cover for her. Mary will be taking an IEP release day, and Alison Halderman will substitute for her.

REPEAT – PE and Play Practice

The primary Japanese teachers and Michelle have been trying to coordinate using the gym for play practice and for PE. With Michelle absent Thursday and Friday, we did not confirm the play for the next two weeks. We did find that on Thursday that PE could be held in the gym with play practice being held on the stage (with curtains closed).
This week, we will hold PE in the gym while play practice is held on stage with curtains closed.
On the days of the final performances (May 17, 18, 19) PE will be held outside if weather permits or in classrooms if it doesn’t. I am open to hearing other ideas if teachers do not want their students using their classrooms for PE. If the weather is sunny next week, then we can plan on having PE outside.
