Dear YG staff,
We are down to the final week, and so close to the end. This year has been filled with many challenges, pivots, changes, staff shortages, COVID quarantines, and adjusting to colocated life at 850 Howard. Thank you for diligently supporting our students and for guiding them through this rough year.
Items of Note
Last Week PBiS InfoAt our last staff meeting, we discussed having a Spirit Week and other events to finish out the year. See the Last Week PBiS Info doc for all the information. Wednesday Mixed Recess PM – Change in ScheduleNote that I made some small changes in the PM recess on Wednesday in order to create some transition time between recess periods. See the revised recess schedule below: 1:45-1:55 – Grades 3 & 4 Please adjust your schedules to accommodate the changes. Here’s a summary of the Spirit Week Schedule Monday, 6/13 – Mismatch socks/shoes day Staff Birthday CelebrationLast week, we talked about having our last quarterly birthday celebration this final week, and I would bring a birthday cake on Friday. After thinking about all the food staff will be having on Friday, I thought it would be better to celebrate birthdays on Thursday instead. |

Year End ChecklistHere is a link to the online YG Year End Checklist. It’s still in draft mode, but the first page is final, so you should plan on completing each of the 10 items. I need to check with Dave to see what he needs to be checked off regarding custodial needs. When he confirms or revises his side, we will print out the checklists and put them in your mailboxes. We can talk further at the staff meeting. Technology Checkout Contract 2022-23If you are taking home your school laptop, iPad, or other equipment over the summer, complete the linked 4J Technology Equipment Checkout Contract 2022-23. |
YG Staffing UpdatesKindergarten English Teaching Position – We interviewed three candidates last Thursday, and I submitted a name to HR. I will likely hear something on Monday. I will make an announcement as soon as I hear from HR. Meeting Schedules for Next Year – DraftSee linked draft Meeting Schedules in the Google shared drive. It was shared at last week’s staff meeting, but repeated here for EAs who were not at the meeting. 2022-2023 Morning ArrivalI mentioned this in a previous newsletter, but I wasn’t sure what our protocols would be like next fall. I’m planning as if we will be back to pre-COVID norms in 2022-2023. I will plan on having the cafeteria open at 7:50 or 8:00AM so that our students can have breakfast in the cafeteria. We will let students out of the cafeteria and into the main doors at 8:20. Break SpacesIn response to several people asking for input about break spaces for next year, I created a Google doc with a draft of where students will be able to take sensory or other breaks. See the Student Supports doc. This document will grow as it will eventually be used to describe all of our student supports in the building. |
Site Council Parent RepresentativesLast Thursday, we cancelled the site council meeting since both parent representatives could not attend. At that time, we did not have anyone apply to serve as a parent representative. At the end of the prior week, though, I received one from Marisa Kettelhodt. See her Site Council Application MK. Last week, I received another Site Council Application – MB from Mark Blaine. And yet another parent, Sarena Cook. We will consider Marisa, Mark, and Serena for site council membership at our June meeting. |

Miscellaneous Items for InformationSeeking Summer School Administrative InternDowntown can’t find any assistant principals interested in doing the second part the summer SEAL program, so they changed the job to a licensed position, so teachers or any licensed employees can apply. Allan Chinn will be principal the first two weeks to get things started, July 12 – 22, also working with this person, and after that they would be in charge though August 12th (though Allan actually reports back to work the following Wednesday, so there’s only two days where he is not there). If any of you are interested in some extra summer work and experience, here’s the Job Posting. EOA School Choice Process for Next YearNext year, the Eugene Online Academy (EOA) will be treated as its own school and that parents will have to go through the regular school choice process to enroll. We hope this will cut back on the back and forth schools have experienced this year. Fox Hollow RedesignSSD’s Fox Hollow program is being redesigned to be more of a temporary placement and not as much of a permanent placement. Linked here is the Fox Hollow 2.0 Redesign Slideshow that was presented to principals last week if you are interested. ILoveYouGuys Training for Building AdministratorsSince many of you were interested in 4J’s safety trainings and drills this year, we were supposed to be transitioning from our old safety protocols to ILoveYouGuys protocols. Building administrators, including John, Sarah, and myself, will be in two days of training on June 20-21. Free Summer CampsHere’s a link to the Free 2022 Summer Camps located on the 4J website. We will announce this in next week’s family newsletter. |
Consumable Ordering RemindersTeachers should place orders for Math and Science Consumables you (or your replacement if you are leaving your grade or classroom) this week: 2022-2023 Math Consumables Order (Due Wednesday) – Jamie’s Email. 2022-2023 Science Kit Consumables Restocking (Due Friday) – Jamie’s Email. |
REPEAT – End of Year Classroom Pack-UpWhile our rules and expectations for visitors and volunteers continue unchanged for the remainder of this year, there is another exception. As staff work to pack-up their classrooms, we have heard from some campuses that it would be helpful for staff to have the assistance of a friend or family member to do so. For the last week of school, when students are not in session, 4J will allow friends and family members to assist on campus with packing classrooms. Let me know if you plan on inviting friends or family to help on that last week. Make sure to have every visitor log-in to Raptor and limit their movement throughout the building. Let me know if you have questions. ELA Materials Boxed-Up – Downtown is sending all classroom teachers six boxes to pack up all ELA materials, Journeys and Being a Writer. Teachers may keep any books or pieces you want to keep for future use. Classified staff can help with packing on the June 10th grading day. We will store the boxes over the summer for Warehouse Staff to pick-up in August. Diverse Classroom Libraries Inventory – Teachers will inventory their Diverse Classroom Library Book Sets. Principals were informed that teachers would receive an email with directions, but here is a brief slidedeck with instructions. In brief, there are two processes depending if you are teaching the same grade next year or if you are moving (grades or schools).
Classroom Libraries – email from Lynette Williams
Report Card Grading Day Expectations – Friday, June 10th is a regular work day for both classified and licensed staff.
REPEAT – FOSS Science KitsThis information is mostly a repeat, but the Spring 2022 Restocking Form is now hyperlinked for your reference.
REPEAT – iPad CollectionsThe district has made the decision to collect all student iPads K-8 at the end of the 2021-2022 School year. While some schools have continued with a true 1:1 where students take iPads home daily others have chosen to keep devices at school. Most schools already have enough carts to accommodate this, but the technology department is currently working on inventory and moving carts from middle schools to support this initiative. Once you have all of your cows in place you may start requiring students to maintain iPads at school. Starting May 31st after Memorial Day, all devices at all elementary schools need to be stored at school. |
Guest Teachers and SubstitutesMonday – Kelly Stroh absent and no substitute at this time. Tuesday – Sayaka is out and Alison is her guest teacher; Kelly is expected to be absent, and Matt Houser will substitute. Wednesday – Takako is out and Jody is her guest teacher. Jennie is also out, and we do not have a substitute for her. Thursday – Scott will be absent, but Ann Gilles is his substitute; Claryn will be out, but Jessica Claypool will be her substitute. Naoko will be out in the afternoon, but Matt Houser will be her guest teacher. |
Summer Office Hours – The following are the summer office hours that all elementary schools will be following. We will put this information in the next newsletter.
2022/2023 Teacher Report dates – In case you missed the email from Rob Hess, the two dates for professional development added to the start of the year are August 26 and 29th. Tuesday August 30th is the usual start day and continues to be a protected planning day. |
