YG Staff Newsletter – November 29, 2021

Dear YG staff,

I hope you all had a nice, relaxing weekend. I had a long Wednesday last week. It was a reminder that the holidays can be a stressful time for some students and their families. We should be prepared for some out-of-the ordinary behaviors or some behaviors being more frequent. Coming off a long weekend, it would also be a good to spend some time reviewing expectations and reconnecting. We have a three week period (with a 4-day week in the middle) before winter break. I hope you are all taking care of yourselves and supporting each other.

I also want to take this moment to thank you all for the many ways you support our students and their families. Take care this week.

Erin’s Law and Second Step Child Safety Unit

In case you haven’t done so, teachers need to cover lessons 1-4 of the Second Step Child Protection Unit before winter break.

COVID Protocol Reminders

ODE Outdoor Mask Requirement & Test-to-Stay Changes – An ODE Bulletin and ODE News Release from last week announced that the state will soon issue revised guidelines that don’t require masks to be worn outdoors and new rules so students do not need to quarantine if they test negative for COVID. However, 4J is working with the county to determine next steps on these and what it means for schools, so at this time all 4J COVID protocols are status quo until further notice. Stay tuned!

3-Feet Physical Distance Reminder – We need to remind students to maintain 3-feet physical distance, especially when they are walking in line, lining up in class, lining up at the end of recess, or lining up outside the cafeteria

Gym Needed on December 10th

Mark your calendars! We will need to use the gym on Friday, December 10th, for vision and dental screening. This was announced in the YG family newsletter, but I did not explicitly mention it in the staff newsletter. You should be aware that the gym will not be available for taiko practice on this particular Friday morning.

Language Arts Adoption Updates

If you’re interested, Expeditionary Learning (EL) and Wit & Wisdom are the two curriculum choices that will be piloted this year. One of them will be adopted for implementation next school year.

Behavioral Safety Assessment Training Video

Sheri Hoyland, the 4J Behavioral Safety Assessment Coordinator (threats, suicide, safety, etc.), asked principals to share with staff the linked Behavioral Safety Assessment Training Video. Linked here is her full Behavior Safety Assessment email, which also includes a link to the Student Wellness & School Safety Department website, which is your “one stop shop” for all things Student Wellness & School Safety Department, and also the linked Age Appropriate Sexual Behavior in Children and Young People , which delineate which behaviors are Age Appropriate, Concerning, or Very Concerning by age range (0-4, 5-9, 9-12, and 13-18).

K-5 Health Curriculum Adoption/Pilot Opportunity

If you are interested in being on the adoption team to help select a new 4J Elementary Health Curriculum, let me know by the end of the week. I will submit your name to our Health TOSA. See email for more information.
